Established in March 2022 by Atyaan Jungalwala, Chemould CoLab is an extension program of Chemould Prescott Road that focuses on supporting emerging artists at an early stage of their careers. The program operates as a part-time residency through the months of May-September, where a pair or trio of artists are invited to live and work in the space located in the heart of the city, Colaba.
Through the rest of the year, the space is programmed with exhibitions; solo and group exhibitions of emerging artists alongside engaging art workshops. The program ignites dialogues, inspires innovation, and nurtures a new wave of artistic expression. By bridging the gap between emerging talent and enthusiasts, it cultivates a vibrant ecosystem where artists flourish and collectors discover the pulse of contemporary art in India.
While Chemould CoLab is a young gallery, it draws from the rich legacy of Chemould Prescott Road, founded in 1963 by Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy, which was then carried forward by Shireen Gandhy.
Chemould has been a cornerstone of India’s art scene since its inception. The gallery is dedicated to promoting and showcasing artists working across interdisciplinary and experimental media, and it maintains a significant presence in global art fairs on an international stage. Artists have always been central to Chemould’s mission. The gallery has played a key role in launching the careers of leading Indian artists, including S.H. Raza, Tyeb Mehta, Bhupen Khakhar, Atul Dodiya, Anju Dodiya, and L.N. Tallur, to name a few.
