Kuldeep Singh b. 1984
Kuldeep Singh is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, New York with practice traversing in oil painting and immersive performances/films. Born out of a decade-long and rigorous training in Indian classical dance of Odissi, under the tutelage of critically acclaimed exponent Madhavi Mudgal in New Delhi. Kuldeep's work weaves re-imagined elements into a rich tapestry of speculative narratives, exploring queer subjectivity entwined with ecofeminism through a play between figuration and abstraction. His painting practice, anchored in oil on canvas, embodies the essence of his multidisciplinary exploration. Reinterpreting the historic Ragamala paintings through a queer and ecological lens since 2019, his strokes are whimsical, bringing to life storytelling rooted in Sanskrit literature and the Natyashastra. His canvas becomes a playground for mischief, sensuality, and denial, resulting in a hypnotic world charged with emotive tones of pathos, confusion, and wonder. Kuldeep's work invites viewers into a realm where tradition and innovation coalesce, creating a space for introspection and dialogue on the intersections of culture, identity, and contemporary existence.
He holds a BFA from College of Art, University of Delhi (2007) and MFA from University of Iowa (2015) on full scholarship. His selected residencies include: Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2014), Yaddo (2015), Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (2016), HH Arts Spaces in Goa and Residency Unlimited (both 2018), LES Studio Program (2020) among others. His accolades include the competitive New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (2018), Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Dance Fellowship (2022), Kreilsheimer & Jones Fellowship, Seattle (2024).
Kuldeep’s paintings have been acquired by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (New Delhi), and shown at Brooklyn Museum (NY) and Kistefos Museum (Norway). And a solo project at Kistefos Museum (Norway) in the summer of 2026. Recently, he has shown works with Perrotin (NY), Mint Gallery (Munich) and Victoria Miro Gallery (London).
