VINITA MUNGI Return of the gaze, 2025 Ceramic materials 10 x 10 in

This multi-part ceramic sculpture draws from Jayaprabha’s poem Looks (Chupulu), which confronts the violence of the gaze and the ways women’s bodies are continuously watched, pursued, and wounded. The work is composed of interlocking elements that nest within one another, echoing how looking operates across layers—public and private, external and internal. Eyes appear throughout the structure, facing inward and outward, implicating both the watcher and the watched. As the pieces are handled and reassembled, the gaze is unsettled and returned. What begins as surveillance transforms into resistance, suggesting a shift from being seen to seeing back —sharpened, alert, and defiant.
