VINITA MUNGI Operating Assumptions, 2025 Ceramic Materials 19 x 10 in

This clay board game draws on Emily Martin’s The Egg and the Sperm, which exposes how scientific language embeds cultural assumptions about gender into biological “facts.” Using play, touch, and fragile material, the work transforms reproductive narratives into a game of rules, errors, and interventions. By reshaping biology in clay, the piece emphasizes how ideas of activity, passivity, value, and worth are not neutral truths but constructed positions—molded, reinforced, and repeatable. The game invites players to handle these assumptions directly, revealing how easily they are formed, challenged, or undone.
